Former India pacer and Dr DY Patil group's sports director Abey Kuruvilla came out in support of their player Pravin Tambe, who is under the scanner for playing in an unsanctioned T20 tournament in USA alongside banned Bangladeshi cricketer Mohammed Ashraful.

According to a report published in ESPNCricinfo, the 43-year-old Mumbai and Rajasthan Royals leg-spinner and former Bangladesh captain Ashraful represented South Gujarat CC Juniors against Bulls on July 27 in the Lauren Hill cricket tournament in New Jersey. Bangladesh Cricket Board has banned Ashraful for five years for his role in match-fixing.
Tambe, who was playing league cricket in the United Kingdom for the last few months, also did not take permission from the Mumbai Cricket Association before playing in the T20 tournament. Kuruvilla said Tambe played a practice match before the tournament.
"I have spoken to Pravin and he said he played a practice match and did not participate in the tournament. Pravin was in US on a holiday at a friend's place. He was urged to play there and since it was a friendly match, he played. He is vigilant enough to understand the rules. Pravin said he would not have played the match had he known about Ashraful's presence. He did not participate in any other matches after that," said Kuruvilla.
