Vilasrao is confident his address issue will not stop him from contesting for MCA's presidentship
Union Minister for Rural Development & Panchyati Raj, Vilasrao Deshmukh is confident that the address issue will not stop him from contesting the prestigious Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) elections smoothly.
As per the MCA constitution, a candidate has to be a resident of Mumbai, Thane or Navi Mumbai. As widely reported in the media, Deshmukh has given his native place Babhalgaon (taluka and district Latur) address to Rajya Sabha.
According to sources close to him, the Congress leader who has backing of the outgoing MCA and International Cricket Council chief Sharad Pawar, is keen to get the president's post of the richest cricket body in the country.
Deshmukh is believed to have told his supporters yesterday that he is ready to face any dispute arising over his address.u00a0 "He seems confident of winning the MCA elections unscathed," said a prominent member the cricketing body.
"He has been advised by some legal experts that according to a Supreme Court judgment, residential proof within a state cannot be disputed as it is immaterial whether one belongs to a particular district within the state."
Sources said that even Sharad Pawar, who backed out of the MCA president's race because his address was mentioned as Baramati in the Lok Sabha, had sought legal advice from a high ranking legal expert and was advised that one can change his residential address within a day. But the senior leader was of the opinion that it was not proper to change the residential address for a only one election.
