For the first years of the Indian Premier League, Wasim Akram was a firm fixture in the tournament, either as commentator or in the dug out as part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team, who he helped to title triumphs in 2012 and 2014.

The political climate between India and Pakistan has ensured that players from across the border are not welcomed with open arms in the league, but Akram will soon be working with an Indian once more, in a completely new set up.

As mentor of the Maratha Arabians, Akram is looking forward to working closely with Virender Sehwag, who is the Icon player of the team in the T10 Cricket League tournament that will be played in Sharjah in December.

"I've worked with Viru in the past and it is always great to spend time with him," Akram told mid-day. "When I knew we were working together, I joked with Viru that I would be conducting a fitness test for him as soon as he joined the team."

But, Akram hoped the T10 Cricket League could do more than that. "It is unfortunate that there is no Pakistani participation in the IPL and equally that there aren't more Indians in this league," said Akram. "I always love travelling to India and working there, I've made some really close friends there and having not gone there in the last two years I miss the people, the culture, the environment."
