Virender Sehwag quitting as Delhi Daredevils skipper yesterday shouldn't come as a surprise considering he never went out of his way to say that he is a great IPL fan.
In fact, he hit a funny bone when he said that playing IPL is more pressurising than figuring in one-day internationals because if you lose in the IPL, players have to explain to the team owners the next day as to why they lost. There's no such scrutiny while playing for India. Recently, Sehwag went on record to say that he preferred playing one-day internationals and Tests than Twenty20s.
Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir, who will take over the reins from Sehwag in the next month's Champions League Twenty20, said he didn't know why Sehwag gave up captaincy.
"I got the news of my appointment as captain of Delhi Daredevils today.u00a0 I accepted it. It is a pleasant surprise," Gambhir told MiD DAY yesterday. "Of course I will have a word with Viru and consult with him as far as leading the team is concerned. I don't know why he gave up captaincy, but I am sure I will get his advice all the time when I lead during the Champions League in India."
