Taking cognisance of the over-age issue in age-group cricket tournaments, Prof Ratnakar Shetty, Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) General Manager Game Development urged the organisers to follow strict vigil in such cases

"This (overage) issue is a menace in India, something which we need to fight against. The BCCI has been strict with this last year and now we have a proper system in place," Shetty said at the launch of the Mumbai leg of the Coca-Cola Cricket Cup U-16 inter-school tournament at the Cricket Club of India yesterday.u00a0

According to Shetty, the BCCI disqualified many U-16 cricketers last year after they were found overage. "Last year the Delhi High Court passed a judgment that made X-ray tests compulsory along with birth certificates.

"The BCCI is following the same procedure and there were many cases in the U-16 category where players failed in the X-ray test. We should ensure that the players are within the age group. Those who are eligible should get a chance at the right age," he said.

The Mumbai leg of the tourney will have the top 24 teams, who participated in the Giles and Harris Shield inter-school tournaments, taking part along with four teams from Thane. u00a0
