SWIMMER Yudhishthir Jaising of Bombay Scottish broke the 100m backstroke record in the boys under-14 category with a timing of 01:09.40 in the MSSA Aditya Birla 45th annual inter-school aquatic championships yesterday.

AVM Bandra's Rahul Kakkad (01:13.46 in 2004) was the previous record holder. Yudhishthir enjoyed a profitable day with a gold in the 100m backstroke and silver in the 100m butterfly. He was also part of the 4x50 freestyle relay.

Since he suffered from asthma, his doctor recommended swimming as a remedy. After winning his first individual championship at the early age of five at the Khar Gymkhana, his love for the sport grew immensely.u00a0u00a0

Yudhishthir had been performing consistently at the national level from 2004, bagging medals in all categories especially backstroke which is his favourite event.

A shoulder injury forced him to stay away from the pool last year so he used the inter-school aquatic championship to get in the groove.

"After a poor performance last year, I had to bounce back. I had thought of breaking this record as it wasn't such a difficult one to break. It feels great as I have been training very hard," he said.
