The Wankhede Stadium is not proving to be a happy hunting ground for Chennai Super Kings, at least when they face Mumbai Indians in the IPL. The four-time champions registered their second lowest IPL total after being shot out for 97 in 16 overs by MI on Thursday. Their lowest total of 79 also came at the same venue and against the same opponent in 2013. Skipper MS Dhoni, 36 not out, was the lone bright spot in CSK's shambolic batting performance.
At the time of going to press, MI were struggling at 66-4 after 10 overs.
MI began with a bang, claiming three wickets in the first two overs. Daniel Sams, who was the pick of the bowlers with 3-16, dismissed in-form CSK opener Devon Conway for a first-ball duck, trapped leg before. The Kiwi batsman could not opt for DRS as the review system was not available due to a short circuit and generator failure. The replays, however, showed that the ball was straying down leg side.
Two balls later, an undecided Moeen Ali ended up giving a dolly to short mid-wicket. Jasprit Bumrah began with a wicket-maiden when he caught Robin Uthappa plumb in front. Sams, who bowled four wides in the first over, again strayed down the leg side, but induced a nick to the âkeeper from CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad (7). Ambati Rayudu (10) then inside-edged one to wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan as half the CSK side were back in the dugout in the first six overs.
