IPL 2024: Jadeja's stunning ball show helps CSK win by 28 runs vs PBKS

Ravindra Jadeja orchestrated a masterclass all-round show as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) regained their winning touch with a comprehensive 28-run win over Punjab Kings in a low-scoring IPL fixture here on Sunday. Wily leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (3-23) and seamer Harshal Patel (3-24) put up a spirited show, but Jadeja made a crucial 43 that came off just 26 balls to prop CSK to a par 167-9 after they were sent in to bat by Sam Curran.

The left-arm spinner then returned to grab three for 20 in four overs in the crucial middle-over phase to derail Punjab's chase, which ended at 139 for nine. Jadeja admitted that they fell short by 15-20 runs, but lauded their disciplined bowling show "We thought we were 15-20 runs short, but we did not bowl loose balls in the Powerplay and in the middle overs," Jadeja said.

"The fast bowlers bowled well in the Powerplay. Tushar got two important wickets and then Mitch [Mitchell Santner] and me did the job in the middle overs." Jadeja said it was tricky batting in the middle overs. "It was a day game, so the wicket was slow. As usual, it was expected because it was so hot. "It (the pitch) always seems flat in the Powerplay. But when the ball gets old, it does not always come on. When playing at a new venue, you don't know how much it will turn or stop.

"My role as a batter is to build partnerships and then play the big shots towards the end. Sometimes, when we lose wickets in the Powerplay, we do not get momentum. In the matches we win, we play all phases well," said Jadeja. Comeback pacer Tushar Deshpande (2-35) and impact sub Simarjeet Singh (2-16) also featured among wickets for CSK. Santner, who was playing his first match of the season, was brilliant during his tidy 1-10 from three overs. Having lost three of their last four matches, CSK thus returned to winning ways and jumped to third place in the standings.

Injured CSK pacer Pathirana returns to Lanka

CSK's Matheesha Pathirana's outing in the ongoing IPL is all but over as the pacer will return to Sri Lanka to recover from a hamstring injury. The right-arm slinger played six matches in this IPL, picking up 13 wickets at an economy of 7.68. Pathirana last played for CSK during their 78-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he bowled two overs and picked up the wickets of Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen. Pace bowling all-rounder Deepak Chahar too is set to miss the remainder of the IPL with a niggle he sustained during the match against Punjab at Chepauk.
