Swami Vivekanand players after winning the Giles Shield
Swami Vivekanand International (Gorai) won the 121st Giles Shield, bagging the symbol of U-14 cricket supremacy for the second consecutive year as they beat IES New English (Bandra) by 277 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
IES New English were bundled out for 72 in the 1st innings, thanks to pacer Vardhan Patel's 6-35
IES were restricted to 133-5 in 40 overs in their second innings (chasing 411) by the Arjun Lotlikar-led SVIS team with Sanjyot Sathavle (35') Rishabh Kotai (31') offering some resistance. Bollywood star Suniel Shetty, who played the game at a competitive level, was the chief guest.
Special guest Shishir Hattangadi, the former Mumbai Ranji Trophy captain, in his brief speech, emphasised the need of making friends and building camaraderie along the way no matter the wins and the losses on the field of play. Players from the winning team and runners-up received cash prizes from the Cricketers Foundation and myysports.com.
