Three women from Maharashtra are training overseas for the Commonwealth Games synchronised swimming event but a leading state association official was unable to say on what basis the trio was picked to be put through its paces.
"Three swimmers from Maharashtra, part of a total of 14 from the state, are training for the synchronised swimming event of the Commonwealth Games. We have been sent a circular to this effect by the Swimming Federation of India. You will have to ask SFI about the criteria for choosing them," said Maharashtra Amateur Aquatics Association secretary Kishore Vaidya today.
According to Vaidya, the three swimmers undergoing training overseas are Avani Dave, Kavita Khopkar and Bijal Vasant and he said as per his view they were the most promising ones.
Vaidya also indicated that only these three swimmers were shortlisted for synchronised swimming in the SFI circular sent to all its affiliated units.
SFI's general secretary Virendra Nanavati, however, told PTI from Delhi that the federation had not yet selected the synchronised swimming team for the Games.
