City lad Aryan Goveas stormed into the men's singles final of the R5 lakh AITA Pune Open All India ranking tennis tournament at the Deccan Gymkhana on Friday and also set himself up for a grand double, winning the men's doubles title.
Seventeen-year-old Goveas outplayed Pune's Jayesh Pungalia 6-2, 6-4 in the last four clash and then paired up with Nitten Kirrtane to beat second seeds S D Prajwal Dev and Suraj Prabodh of Karnataka 6-0, 6-4 in the doubles final. In a semi-final, Goveas broke Pungalia in the third and seventh games of the first set to win 6-2.
The second set was a much tighter affair, that saw Goveas and Pungalia trade a service break each early in the set, before Goveas broke Pungala in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead and served out the tie. In the singles final on Saturday, Goveas will take on Tejas Chaukulkar, who beat Nitten Kirrtane 6-7, 7-6, 6-1.
