Just two days after winning three titles (girls U-13 singles, girls U-13 doubles and girls U-15 doubles) at the Maharashtra Sub Junior State Selection badminton tournament in Nagpur, Simran Singhi made it into the semi-finals of the girls' U-13 and U-15 singles category in the inaugural Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana Sub Junior District Badminton Challenge yesterday.

In the U-13 quarter-finals, she beat Kavya Shankar 21-3, 21-2 without breaking into a sweat. In the U-15 quarters too, Simran registered a comfortable 21-9, 21-12 win over Divya Hegde.

Simran, a Class VIII student of the Ryan International ICSE (Malad), said that this year defending her sub-junior national title would be important.

"There are a lot of tournaments coming up in the next two months. I want to practice hard for the upcoming Sub Junior National Badminton Championships at Rohtak (September 1-7).

"There is another state selection tournament in Ratnagiri (August 10-14) before the nationals. So I might give the All India Sub Junior ranking badminton tournament (August 18-24) a miss to train for the nationals. It's important for me to defend my U-13 crown at Rohtak," said the Kandivli resident.
