Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara admitted his side only had themselves to blame for their failure to qualify for the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

The Turin giants needed a point against Bayern Munich to progress to the last 16 but crashed to a 4-1 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday.

"It's a huge disappointment not only for myself but for the players and for the fans," said Ferrara. "To leave this competition hurts.

"But in the last two games of the Champions League we have taken zero points."

The outcome marked Juve's second slip in the competition after their 2-0 defeat at Bordeaux last month, while it brought to an end a run of 16 home European games without defeat.

"We have to analyse what went wrong," said Ferrara. "But I don't want to find excuses.

"I don't think it is right to blame several players because the performance of everyone was not up to standard."

Juve had taken an early lead through David Trezeguet before Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt equalised from the penalty spot on the half-hour mark.

The Bianconeri conceded three goals in the second half to wave goodbye to Europe's elite club competition.

"We were not able to control the game when we the result was levelled," said Ferrara.

"Bayern were superior in every facet of the game.
