Chelsea lost for the first time under Carlo Ancelotti as Wigan claimed a shock 3-1 victory at the DW Stadium, while Manchester United defeated Stoke 2-0 to move top of the Premier League on Saturday.
Ancelotti had led Chelsea to six successive league wins, as well as two more victories in the Champions League and League Cup, since arriving from AC Milan in the close-season.

But Ancelotti's record came to an end in acrimonious circumstances as Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech was sent off in the second half.
Chelsea fell behind in the 16th minute when Charles N'Zogbia's cross was headed home by Titus Bramble.
Ancelotti's team levelled in the 48th minute as Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland allowed Didier Drogba's shot to squirm into the net, giving the Ivorian his 100th Chelsea goal.
But Wigan regained the lead when Hugo Rodallega tumbled under the slightest contact from Cech to win a penalty in the 53rd minute.
