The Spaniard saw off Australian qualifier Matthew Barton 6-2 6-4 in Auckland to set up a last-eight meeting with Czech Lukas Rosol, who stunned fifth-seeded Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-4 7-6 (7/5).
Tournament debutant Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, seeded two, advanced with a 6-3 6-4 victory over 2008 champion Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.
