Spain's David Ferrer, seeded 29th at Indian Wells, defeated local boy Tennys Sandgren 6-2, 7-6 (3) in straight sets to advance to the third round of the tennis tourney. The 35-year-old Ferrer took an hour and 47 minutes to knock off Sandgren, ranked 59th by the ATP, at the season's first Masters 1000 tourney on Sunday, reports Efe.
The Spaniard, in the first encounter between the two players, clearly outmatched the 26-year-old American right from the start, although Sandgren broke his service for the first time in the 12th game of the second set and took the match into a tie-break.
In the third round, Ferrer will go up against the winner of the match between Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro and Australia's Alex de Minaur.
