Beijing Olympic gold medallist Elena Dementieva dug her own grave to go down to Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine in the second round at the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament on Tuesday.
The Russian third seed, the champion here in 2006, committed a double fault twice on a break point and once on a match point to lose 2-6, 7-6 (7/3), 1-6 to the 33rd-ranked Bondarenko.
Dementieva is among a number of top players to fall by the wayside, including world number one Dinara Safina and French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, both compatriots, as well as American second seed Venus Williams.
