The grimace finally gave way to a smile despite the struggle Tiger Woods went through in the third round of the Hero World Challenge. Woods, whose 69-68 start raised everybody's expectations, hurtled down to reality with a 75 that took away any possibility of a dream return at a tournament that has been the scene of five of his wins and three of his comebacks.

As Woods plummeted from T-5 to T-10, Charley Hoffman (70) shot the best joint card of the day to extend his lead to five shots on a day when conditions were demanding. Hoffman now has a 5-shot lead over Jordan Spieth (72) and Justin Rose (71), but within his head he knows that he has never held on to win, when he has led after 54 holes in his career. But if the past is what he is looking at, he could take heart from the fact that the last three third-round leaders at the Hero World Challenge, have gone on to win - Spieth in 2014, Bubba Watson in 2015 and Hideki Matsuyama in 2016.
