Mumbai: Even though Anju Bobby George had to wait for eight years to see her silver medal at the 2005 World Athletics Final in Monte Carlo upgraded to gold, former sprinter Ashwini Nachappa does not feel the joy is any less sweeter.
Anju's second place finish in the long jump final was upgraded after Tatyana Kotova was found to have taken a banned substance during a re-test of her samples.
The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) on Monday disqualified Kotova and suspended her till 2015.
"Whether it is eight years, a gold medal is a gold medal. She was at the peak of her performance at that point of time.
We cherish those moments when she won the silver and we are happy that she got the gold, of course for other reasons," Nachappa said during a promotional event yesterday.
