India's golf fraternity more sympathetic than condemning to naughty woods

As people wonder whether Tiger Woods would make it a dishy dozen by the end of this week, (the tally of his women has reached 10), many believe Woods will be back roaring, never mind the frenetic tumbling of curvy skeletons from his closet.

As people wonder whether Tiger Woods would make it a dishy dozen by the end of this week, (the tally of his women has reached 10), many believe Woods will be back roaring, never mind the frenetic tumbling of curvy skeletons from his closet.

When India's well-known golf events company Tiger Sports in Delhi came into existence, in 1997, it took its name from Tiger Woods. Now, several Tiger transgressions later, Brandon De Souza, Managing Director (MD), laughs when asked if he is embarrassed about the name. "Not really, nobody has made that connection. I still say it is high time we need to find some Tigers in the Indian woods junior golfers with Tiger's golfing potential."

He'll survive
De Souza says Woods will survive the scandal, "Because, he is human as well and will continue to achieve hugely in the game. I don't know if all these women are for real or are gold-diggers emerging out of the woodwork now."

Ashit Luthra, president, Indian Golf Union (IGU) says, "Tiger will be back, as a black man in a white man's sport and that is attest to his mental strength.

"We all expect our heroes to be perfect, everybody in India kisses, but we do not want our heroines to kiss on screen. Everybody can have an affair but not the President of the USA. Remember, one almost got impeached for it...(laughs). In the end, there is no better sportsman (Roger Federer included) at overcoming adversity than Woods," ends the Kolkata-based Luthra.

Champika Sayal, secretary-general of the Women's Golf Association of India (WGAI) emphasises the human angle, saying, "This is terrible paparazzi, the way the papers have fed off the Tiger Woods scandal. Yet, I think Woods will emerge from this, stronger than ever." The former golfer adds, "Clinton too got away after the scandal and so will Woods. This is more of an illness than anything and Woods needs support now."

Obama and Tiger
Says former golfer and now Golf Digest India magazine editor, Prabhdev Singh, "There seems to be a new woman almost on a daily basis.

"A lot will depend on Woods' game u2013 how well he plays when he comes back in late January, because above everything Woods' USP is his golf game."

Singh ends with a laugh: "For our January 2010 issue, we have Woods on the cover with US president Obama, who is a keen golfer. In the story, they are talking about how they can help each other. I do not know if Obama would want help from Woods right now."
