Substitute Manan Shastri's second-half strike kept St Mary's ICSE's hopes alive in the boys under-14 Utpal Sanghvi football knockout tournament at Azad Maidan yesterday.
The Mazgaon school beat Our Lady's School, Dadar 3-0 in the tie-breaker after both the teams failed to break 1-1 deadlock in full-time.
Super-sub Manan said adversity brings out the best in them. St Mary's conceded a goal just before the half-time, but post break they were a rejuvenated side.
Several chances were created with more flair shown on the wings and midfield. They got the equaliser when Manan picked up a pass in the box and beat the 'keeper to find the back of the net.
"We get offensive when the opposition scores a goal. Otherwise, we concentrate more on possession of the ball," said Manan.
However, the 11-year-old knows playing in that manner might not yield them positive results always.
St Mary's ICSE skipper Anas Vadgama felt the team gets complacent at times. "We tend to get over-confident at the start of the game which is not right," said Anas.
