Tony Jacklin welcomed Graeme McDowell to an "exclusive club" after the Northern Irishman became the first European winner of the US Open since he himself lifted the trophy 40 years ago.

McDowell won by one shot from France's Gregory Havret after overcoming both a high-class field featuring the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Ernie Els and a tough Pebble Beach course in California on Sunday.

Victory saw the 30-year-old win his first Major title and a delighted Jacklin told Sky Sports here on Monday: "I thought he did a fantastic job. He played really well on the back nine.

"I've told my agent to send him my heartiest congratulations as I don't have his contact details. He's now a member of a very exclusive club -- just the two of us."

"Graeme got it done and looked very sure of himself all the way along."
