Jamaican Prime Minister praises world champ Bolt

Jamaican Prime Minister Bruce Golding was quick off the mark in congratulating sprint star Usain Bolt on his record-setting 100m World Championship triumph in Berlin on Sunday.

"This is another proud moment for Jamaica, another demonstration that we can succeed at whatever we put our hearts to," Golding said after Bolt seized the title in a scorching world record of 9.58sec.

Bolt (22) crushed his own world record of 9.69, set in similarly spectacular fashion at the Beijing Olympics final.

America's 2007 world champion Tyson Gay claimed silver in 9.71sec - a good couple of metres behind Bolt - with former world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica taking bronze.

Golding said he spoke with both by telephone shortly after the final in Berlin.

"Usain Bolt is a testimony to what successes we can achieve through discipline and hard work," Golding said. "Asafa is no less, as he too, despite his injuries, has done exceptionally well.

"We are proud of them both. We are proud of all our athletes and how they have been performing so far in Berlin and we wish them all the best.

"Bolt's world record victory of 9.58 has made us all proud and we look forward to welcoming them home to celebrate their victory coming just one year after our success in the Olympics."
