Spanish world champion Jorge Lorenzo of Yamaha won the Spanish Grand Prix, the second leg of the world championship, here on Sunday after seeing off compatriot Dani Pedrosa and American Nicky Hayden.

Rainy, slithery conditions helped give rise to a number of hair-raising incidents, including a spectacular fall on the seventh lap by six-time event winner Valentino Rossi of Ducati while pole-sitter Casey Stoner also came off his bike.

Ben Spies of Yamaha was another to find the going hard as he ended up in the gravel having stood second at one stage.

Marco Simoncelli of Honda also crashed, in his case after establishing a three second lead, as Lorenzo finished 19.4sec clear of 2008 winner Pedrosa in winning at the venue for the second straight year.
