Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) yesterday took stern action against players who were involved in a brawl during a Times Shield 'B' Division match between Indian Navy and Accountant General (AG) at Cross Maidan. MCA's disciplinary committee decided to ban Indian Navy and its 15 players from participating in any tournaments for two years.
"The umpires presented all that happened in their report. We called both captains to place their side on record. After hearing all the parties involved, we (MCA) decided to ban Indian Navy and its players for two years. MCA will not tolerate any misconduct which will bring disrepute to the game," MCA's Joint Honorary Secretary Dr Unmesh Khanvilkar told mid-day.
Khanvilkar said the umpires' report squarely blamed Indian Navy for triggering the incident. "According to the umpires' report, AG did not use any abusive words while sledging Indian Navy. While the AG bowler was going back to his mark, an Indian Navy batsman pushed him and then within minutes the whole Indian Navy team stormed the field, creating a volatile situation," said Khanvilkar. The match was stopped immediately and no further play was possible.
