Sharapova, who has struggled with leg and forearm injuries since Wimbledon, battled for 13 minutes short of three hours to finish a first match since July.

The fifth-seeded Radwanska took out a 56-minute first set and, after dropping the second set, looked the likely winner when she had three break points for a 2-0 lead in the decider.

But the third-seeded Russian closed out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory.
