Franklin becomes first woman to win six golds at World Championships


Teenager Missy Franklin became the first woman to win six gold medals at a World Swimming Championships as the USA won the women's 4x100m medley relay yesterday in Barcelona. USA clocked 3min 53.23sec to claim gold with Australia at 1.99 back in second and Russia at 3.24 drift in third.

However there was heartbreak for the men's 4x100m medley relay team after they were disqualified.u00a0France won the gold in the event yesterday with Australia second and Japan third.

Although Nathan Adrian of the USA touched the wall first, judges ruled Kevin Cordes had dived in too early on the second leg, causing the disqualification.
The French quartet clocked 3min 31.51sec with Australia at 0.13 back and Japan at 0.75 adrift.

Joy for Yuliya
Russia's Yuliya Efimova won the women's 50m breaststroke gold yesterday with Lithuania's Ruta Meilutyte second and Jessica Hardy of the USA third.

The 21-year-old Efimova clocked 29.52secs with Meilutyte, who broke the Russian's world record in the semi-finals, at 0.07sec back and Hardy 0.28 adrift in an American record.

Ranomi victorious
In the women's 50m freestyle, Holland's Ranomi Kromowidjojo won the gold medal with Australia's Cate Campbell second and Britain's Fran Halsall third.
Kromowidjojo, the Olympic champion, clocked 24.05secs with Campbell, the world 100m champion, at 0.09 back and Halsall at 0.25 adrift.

Elsewhere, Camille Lacourt won the men's 50 metres backstroke gold with French teammate Jeremy Stravius and USA's Matt Grevers tying for second place.

Lacourt, who shared the world 100m backstroke title with Stravius in 2011, touched the wall at 24.42sec, just ahead of Stravius and Grevers who were both 0.08 secs back.

Medley gold for Seto
Japan's Daiya Seto claimed gold in the men's 400m individual medley yesterday with Chase Kalisz in second and Thiago Pereira in third. The 19-year-old powered home in the last 50 metres to clock at time of 4min 08.69 secs with Kalisz at 0.53 and Pereira at 0.79. u00a0

With double defending world champion Ryan Lochte opting not to take part in the event, the race seemed wide open before the start and so it proved.

Japan's other teen sensation, Kosuke Hagino, who already has claimed two silver medals here, looked set for a first gold with 100m to go.

However, as Hagino floundered, Seto moved through the gears to win with Kalisz and Pereira also racing past Hagino to finish on the podium.u00a0
