There were mixed fortunes for the Williams sisters on the opening day of the Sony Ericsson Championship in Doha.
Second seed Serena struggled before beating NO 3 Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6 (8-6) 7-5 in an even contest.
However, defending champion Venus, who is competing alongside her sister in the Maroon Group, fell to Elena Dementieva 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 in her opening tie. It was Dementieva's first win over Venus in five years.
Meanwhile, in the White Group, Victoria Azarenka made short work of Jelena Jankovic on her debut in Doha. The Belorussian raced to a 6-2 6-3 win in one hour 22 minutes in the opening match of the tournament, which features the Top 8 players in the world.
