Ever heard an annual function of Football Players Association of India (FPAI) making news?
Come September 12, the FPAI event will be the talk of the town.
MiD DAY learns that Indian football captain Baichung Bhutia has invited Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to attend the function in New Delhi.
Bhutia spoke to the Gandhi scion, who has agreed to join the party.
"Baichung personally requested Rahulji to attend the function and he has promised to come," FPA CEO and ex-footballer Sumit Mukherjee told MiD DAY yesterday.
Mukherjee revealed that Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee would also attend the function. AIFF president and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel will also be present.
This is the second year in succession that the FPAI will be organising this event.
"It is Baichung's brainchild. Though he is currently in Bangkok with the Indian team, he is monitoring all preparations for the function. We are hoping for a grand show," said Mukherjee.
The best Indian footballer of the year will be selected through voting by all members of the association.
