Sania Mirza would have loved to be a cricketer

She may be the World No 1 doubles tennis player, but had she been born as a boy, tennis ace Sania Mirza would have become a cricketer instead of playing tennis professionally, the Hyderabadi said yesterday.

Fresh from her success in the US Open, where she won the women's doubles title with Martina Hingis, Mirza was conferred an honorary life membership of the 82-year-old Cricket Club of India yesterday.

"If I was born a guy, I would have definitely become a cricketer. Cricket is in my blood. My husband (Shoaib Malik) is a cricketer, my father (Imran) wanted to be a cricketer, my uncle (Mirza Fayaz) was in the Hyderabad Ranji Trophy team.

I am even related to former India captain Ghulam Ahmed (Sania is his grand-niece). I feel connected to cricket," said the 28-year-old.
