American Williams, still smarting from her fourth-round exit to Sabine Lisicki at Wimbledon, made light work of Georgia's Anna Tatishvili in Bastad on Thursday but she quickly found herself a game and two break points down in yesterday's quarter-final.
Dominguez Lino of Spain could not hold the infuriated Williams back, however, and within the hour she had lost 1-6, 1-6 to the 16-time grand slam winner, who took 20 points on her first serve.
Awaiting Williams in the last four is third-seeded Czech Klara Zakopalova, who ended Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp's run by completing a 6-2, 6-3 win in just under an hour.
The other semi-final will see former World No 10 Flavia Pennetta tackle eighth seed and home favourite Johanna Larsson.
