Tottenham Hotspur missed the chance to join champions Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table after losing 1-0 late on to Stoke City at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
The match was goalless until four minutes from time when Glen Whelan, played in by Ricardo Fuller, struck against a Tottenham team down to 10 men with England winger Aaron Lennon off the field after the Londoners had used all three of their substitutions.
At the bottom of the table, basement club Portsmouth were held to a goalless draw by fellow strugglers Hull.
In Saturday's other Premier League matches, Birmingham beat their former manager Steve Bruce's Sunderland side 2-1 and Wigan came from behind to beat Burnley 3-1.
