Thanks to spinner Vijay Gohil (7-90) Sunil Gavaskar XI defeated Andhra Pradesh by 52 runs on Day Three to win the under-23 Madhav Mantri cricket tournament yesterday. Chasing a target of 322, Andhra were bowled out for 269 in 65.3 overs.
Opener M Sriram (106) and T Vamsi Krishna (43) looked to take the visitors over the line, but left-arm spinner Vijay picked up crucial wickets to fashion a win for Sunil Gavaskar XI.
Gavaskar XI emerged champions with three consecutive outright wins. Earlier, batsman Sachin Yadav (93) and Pranav Menon (42) scored quick runs and helped Gavaskar XI to score 264-8 declared in 51 overs in their second essay.
In their first innings, Gavaskar XI, had a good start with Sachin Yadav's cracking ton (113) and skipper Vikrant Auti's third consecutive fifty (72) of the tournament, helping their team to 250 in 78.3 overs.
Andhra bowlers S Srinivas (5-68), G Manish (4-66) helped Gavaskar XI to stay in the match.
Meanwhile, in Andhra Pradesh's first innings, batsman DB Prasanth (67) and T Vamsi Krishna (40) scored fighting knocks in order to keep their team on track, but the Sunil Gavaskar XI spin duo of Vijay (5-65), Karsh Kothari (4-41) bowled out Andhra on 193 runs in 60.5 over.
