Argentina striker Carlos Tevez said he was waiting for a day like this to prove his worth.

Tevez scored twice in his side's 3-1 victory over Mexico yesterday to ease Argentina into the quarter-final and a clash with Germany.

"I needed a match like this to show that I am ready and fine, I am proud to wear this jersey," Tevez said.
"It is an important step towards the final and winning the trophy," Tevez told Sportal. "We are now in quarter-finals and I am very happy.

"The Argentine people are enjoying this World Cup, and have every right to be celebrating. We must, though, think about resting and being fresh for our next game against Germany."

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain scored the Argentines' other goal, while new Manchester United signing Javier Hernandez was on target for the Mexicans.

Though Tevez was in hot form, he was substituted in the second half and the striker was quite bemused by coach Digeo Maradona's decision to take him off.

"I was fighting and felt well. I didn't understand why I was substituted. I wasn't getting the ball so much, but neither were some other players."

The form of Tevez, coupled with the artistry of the world's best player Messi and leading tournament scorer Gonzalo Higuain with four goals underline why Argentina have the most potent attack and are among the favourites to win the World Cup.
