Hired months before the 2004 Athens Olympics, Rach's short stint ended on a bitter note with the German giving the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), the organisation that controlled Indian hockey then, a mouthful before leaving Indian shores to take up an assignment in Egypt.

The legendary Australian coach had a torrid time dealing with Indian officialdom before deciding to quit his position as Technical Director of Indian hockey in July 2008. It was the year in which the eight-time Olympic gold medallists hit the nadir, failing to qualify for the Beijing Olympics and Charlesworth quit in a huff, protesting poor working conditions.

Spanish coach Jose Brasa was brought in with the specific brief to help India qualify directly for the 2012 London Olympics. But once he failed to achieve this target after India could not win gold at the Guangzhou Asian Games, there was little that Brasa could do but begin looking for a new job.
