The first-ever Mumbai Cyclothon, a mass cycling event, dubbed as Tour de Mumbai after its world famous counterpart Tour de France to be held on Sunday, has scored a first by insuring each cyclist/participant for approximately Rs three lakh. "Every participant (the organisers expect approximately 5,000 participants in the event, across all categories), would be insured in case of an accident or injury," said Satish Menon, CEO, Sports 18.

Participants' hospital expenses too would be covered in case of any dire eventuality like losing a limb in case of an accident on the course.

The entire event is insured for Rs five crore, in event of any calamity like floods, or death of a national leader or fire," says Dr Akil Khan, chairman & MD ID Sports Pvt Ltd.

The Tour de Mumbai would have international, top-notch professional cycling teams in the fray. The cyclists have to cycle 100 km.

Internationally, professional cyclists are insured but the Tour de Mumbai also has a huge number of amateur cyclists called the 'junta cyclists' who would be insured.
