Yesterday, Trevor Chesterfield (right), who made Sri Lanka his home after living in South Africa, passed away in Moratuwa, near Colombo.
His wife told Cricketnext.com from Colombo that 'Chesters' woke up 4am yesterday to write yet another cricket article, felt unwell and returned to his bed. Three hours later, he fell off the bed, hurt his head and died.
Chesters (75) reported for MiD DAY regularly in recent years when the Indian team toured Lanka. His email address was lbwbambrose which showed how much he loved the game. And every email message ended with these words: "Cricket is life . . . what comes after are mere details."
He worked with Fanie de Villiers for a biography on the former South African fast bowler. "Trevor was the most committed and capable writer that I have ever met. He could talk and sleep cricket. He was absolutely amazing," said De Villiers.
International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat said: "Trevor was a true lover of the game and a fine writer for more than 50 years. I knew him from his time in South Africa and he was always a fair, balanced and fearless journalist with strong views on the game, underpinned by a genuine desire to see cricket continue to flourish."
