India's Olympic bronze medal-winning ace Vijender Singh followed compatriot Dinesh Kumar into the quarter-finals of the World Boxing Championships in Milan yesterday with a low-scoring 4-2 victory over Canada's Steve Rolls in the 75kg category.
On Monday, Dinesh had made his way into the last eight with a crushing 19-7 victory over Costantin Bejenaru of Romania in the 81kg bout to become the first Indian to enter the quarter-finals here. However, Vijender's victory yesterday was in stark contrast to that of Dinesh. While Dinesh was more aggressive in his approach which reflected in his dominant second (8-2) and third rounds (8-3), Vijender took his time and in fact was down in the opening round 0-1. However, in the next round Vijender pulled out a couple of good punches to win 2-0.
The third round too went to the Indian, who landed a couple of perfect blows even as he took one (2-1).
Vijender then used all his experience to maintain his 4-2 lead in the fourth and final round (0-0).
