Pillay has constantly been voicing his support for the Sahara Group to take over controversy-laden Indian hockey in their own private capacity. He even urged the Indian government to hand over the reins to the Lucknow-based company who, he feels, will do a great job in promoting the national game given their sheer love for sport.
"For a true lover of sport, any sporting investment is a good move and Sahara Shree Subrata Roy Sahara is a huge sports lover. His interest in Liverpool only shows that he is confident of looking after any sport if given the opportunity, whether in India or abroad. He has already proved this by sponsoring the Indian cricket team and the Indian hockey team. I think the Indian government should make use of this opportunity now and invite him to take over Indian hockey totally," Pillay told MiD DAY yesterday.
There were reports of disagreements over mounting debts between Liverpool's current owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who acquired the club in 2007, that led to rumours that a number of foreign buyers were all set to bid for the English Premier League club.
Roy has reportedly tendered a bid to pay off Liverpool's 237 million pounds (approximately Rs 1707.1 crore) debt in return for a stake in the club.
