Hosszu clinches 400m individual medley final having already claimed the 200m crown

Kazan (Russia): Hungary's Katinka Hosszu completed the individual medley double yesterday with victory in the women's 400m final having already claimed the 200m crown.

Hosszu touched the wall at four minutes, 30.29 seconds - just under two seconds short of Ye Shiwen's world record she had been chasing - with Maya di Rado of the United States claiming second at 1.32secs with Emily Overholt of Canada taking bronze at 2.13.
Hosszu matched her double haul from the 2013 world championships when she also left Barcelona with both the 200 and 400m IM golds. This is her third medal in Kazan after also taking a bronze in the 200m backstroke. Meanwhile, Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri won the world 1500m freestyle title yesterday after China's world record holder Sun Yang was a shock withdrawal from the final.
Curious case of Sun
Paltrinieri clocked 14 minutes, 39.67 seconds to claim gold with Connor Jaeger of the United States taking silver at 1.53secs, while Canada's Ryan Cochrane was third at 11.41. The biggest shock of the night came with the swimmers still on the blocks as Sun failed to show, leaving the third lane empty without the event's world record holder, Olympic and world champion.

Chinese officials were unavailable to explain why the 23-year-old long-distance expert was absent after he had already retained his 400 and 800m freestyle world golds. Sweden's Jennie Johansson was the shock winner of the women's 50m breaststroke gold yesterday.
Johansson clocked 30.05 to win on the wall as Jamaica's Alia Atkinson claimed silver at just 0.06sec back while Russia's Yuliya Efimova, the 100m champion, earned bronze at 0.08.
Campbell wins 50m gold
Australia's Bronte Campbell won the women's 50m freestyle final yesterday to complete the sprint double having already won the 100m title. The 21-year-old clocked 24.12 seconds to take gold with Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands taking silver at 0.10sec back as Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom earned bronze at 0.19.
