Danish World No 1 Caroline Wozniacki defeated Serbian Bojana Jovanovski 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the next round of the Madrid Open yesterday.
Fifth seed Australian Samantha Stosur beat Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova 7-6 (7/1), 7-5 in a keenly contested match which saw her move to the next round.

Czech 16th seed Petra Kvitova also advanced 6-3, 6-3 past South African Chanelle Scheepers as Bethanie Mattek-Sands hammered fellow American Vania King 6-0, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Indian Sania Mirza and Russian Elena Vesnina beat Czech Iveta Benesova and Barbora Strycova 6-3, 1-6, 10-2 in the first round of their doubles match.
They will now meet Russians Nadia Petrova and Ana Rodionova in a match to be played today.
