Vivek Jain, the current chairman of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC), says that he has won over Zavaray Poonawalla, younger brother of former RWITC chairman Cyrus, to contest the RWITC Managing Committee elections, in mid-December.

The racecourse buzz goes that Zavaray will be part of Jain's panel, and this is seen as a major boost to Vivek's team, who were being termed the underdogs.
Strangely though, when this reporter called Pune, where Zavaray is based, to confirm whether he would be contesting the Managing Committee elections, a young man who said he was an "assistant" claimed that Zavaray was not in a position to either confirm or deny that he would be contesting the RWITC Managing Committee elections. "He will be able to speak only on Thursday late evening about the matter. He cannot talk about it now."
The call was made late in the evening yesterday. Vivek though insists that Zavaray will contest and said in response to specific questions that, he had been trying to convince Zavaray to contest, "since mid-July from the Bangalore Derby weekend."
