Lady Gaga
Leaked documents of the Tokyo Games have revealed that American singer Lady Gaga was supposed to be dressed as Super Mario for the Olympics opening ceremony. According to British tabloid, The Sun, Nintendo, a Japanese electronics major was set to team up with the pop star as one of the main video games promoted to kickstart the Coronavirus-delayed event.
The Japanese firm eventually pulled out of the Olympics, but documents that local magazine, Bunshun viewed revealed what they had planned. Reportedly, Lady Gaga was set to appear remotely wearing Mario's signature red hat and would then jump into a warp pipe, before reappearing in the arena itself.

But the person who was to be dressed up as Gaga to perform a musical would have been Japanese comedian Naomi Watanabe. The stunt was intended as a homage to former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, who made an appearance as Mario disappearing down a warp pipe at the closing ceremony for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. The plans were made last October, but mention of the Gaga cameo was eventually removed by spring 2021.
