Russian tennis beauty Maria Sharapova believes retirement is a strange concept and it makes her feel older than her age. Sharapova bid adieu to tennis last year after playing professionally for 19 years.

In an interview with Forbes chief content officer Randall Lane on Monday during the Forbes Under 30 Summit in Detroit, Sharapova said with a laugh: "It's [retirement] a terrible word. It makes me feel incredibly old."

After announcing her retirement from tennis, Sharapova, 34, has turned an entrepreneur and investor. The five-time Grand Slam singles champion earned $325 million (approx R2,449 crore) before taxes during her playing career.

In 2012, she launched her candy company, Sugarpova. She also invested in companies such as Tonal, Therabody, Supergoop and Rove Furniture. "I was always considered a tennis player. I just didn't want to be defined by this one thing [tennis], and although I knew that I was good at it, I felt like I had a lot more to offer," remarked Sharapova, who hopes to support health and wellness startups in future.
