Olympic and world champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra is set to grace his home turf for the first time in three years, confirming his participation in the National Federation Cup scheduled to be held in Bhubaneswar from May 12 to 15. The 26-year-old sensation is anticipated to journey to India from Doha after inaugurating his season in the premier Diamond League series' opening leg on May 10.
Chopra's mentor Klaus Bartonietz also affirmed to PTI that his protege will be partaking in the Bhubaneswar event. Joining him in the Doha Diamond League on May 10 will be 28-year-old Kishore Jena, who clinched silver in the Hangzhou Asian Games, where Chopra secured gold.
"As per entries @Neeraj_chopra1 and Kishore Kumar Jena will compete in domestic competition starting May 12 in Bhubaneshwar," the Athletics Federation of India tweeted.
Chopra's last domestic appearance was at the same event on March 17, 2021, where he secured gold with a throw of 87.80m. Subsequently, he has achieved monumental milestones, including a historic gold at the Tokyo Olympics, claiming the Diamond League championship in 2022, attaining the title of world champion in 2023, and defending his Asian Games gold in China. He has also triumphed in three individual legs of the Diamond League and secured a silver in the 2022 World Championships.
