Gargi Talwekar of Ryan International School CBSE was crowned champion in the girls' under-16 category of the MSSA inter-school chess tournament at the St Sebastian HS, Chembur, on Thursday.
Faced with stiff competition, Gargi managed to finish ahead of the field with cumulative score of 6.5 points from the seven-round event. Freeyah Golia of Dhirubhai Ambani International School and Prutha Gajre of Fatima HS completed with nine points each. But Freeyah with a better tie-break score of 29.5 points as compared to 28.5 of Prutha, was declared runners-up. Prutha had to settle for third place.

Meanwhile, the girls' under-14 event was a close contest as three players - Trisha Jagtap of Green Acres Academy, Suhaani Lohia of Dhirubhai Ambani International School and Aanya Agarwal of Podar International School - were tied at the top with seven points each. However, Trisha with a higher tie-break score of 39.5 points, emerged victorious. Suhaani (38.5 points) and Aanya (38 points) were placed second and third respectively.
In the boys' under-10 category, Nivaan Shah (8.5 points) and Vedant Gogri (8 points), both of Don Bosco International, finished first and second respectively. Vihaan Agarwal of Gundecha Education Academy (7.5 points) claimed the third position.
