Joshna Chinappa: Sneak peek into the personal life of the squash star

Joshna Chinappa was born in Chennai on September 15, 1986. She celebrated turning 34 yesterday.

Joshna Chinappa comes from a squash playing family. Her great granduncle  K.M. Cariappa (first commander-in-chief of Indian Army of Independent India), grandfather and her father were all squash players.

It was at age 7 that Joshna Chinappa took a liking for squash and began playing. A year later she was considereing pursuing either badminton or tennis.

Joshna Chinappa's father Anjan manages a coffee plantation. He was also her first coach and he had also represented the Tamil Nadu squash team.

In 2005, Joshna Chinappa became the first Indian player to clinch the British Junior Squash Championship title in the under-19 category.

In the same year, Joshna Chinappa also became the youngest Indian women's national champion.

Joshna Chinappa has won both, gold and silver medals at Commonwealth Games at 2014 Glasgow and 2018 Gold Coast respectively.

Joshna Chinappa is a two-time Asian Games silver medallist and bronze medallist.

Along with Dipika Pallikal Karthik, Joshna Chinappa is considered India's finest women squash players of all time. Dipika and Joshna, both have been ranked in the top 10 list. However, Joshna maintains that they are friend and not rivals. Both her medals at CWG were won along with Dipika Pallikal.

In 2017, Joshna Chinappa became the first Indian to win the Women's Asian Individual Squash Championships.

With 18 titles under her belt, Joshna Chinappa holds the record for most number of national championships.
