New children's play uses live magic to impart social messages

Abhyuday Tamhankar's latest play Wizard from Far West takes a look at the hardships faced by children living on the streets. In a light-hearted vein, the story encompasses elements from two strata of the society to address subjects like family, morals and virtues.

Speaking of how he conceptualised the play, Tamhankar says, "So many times we see elders telling children not to accept eatables from strangers. I took an incident like that wove a funny and fantastical story around the same. The message I want the play to convey is simple - if we want our children to live in a better world, we have to raise them in a better manner."

The play is a little over an hour long and has a cast comprising of grownups alone. "I wanted to cast child actors but, it is impossible to do so, owing to the demands of their academic schedule," he says, adding, "Most of my actors are adept at their craft, carrying decades of experience in theatre." The main draw in this play, however, is the the live magic element. "We have on board a highly talented magician who has choreographed stage magic," Tamhankar adds.
