On the eve of World Environment Day, The Guide spoke to city NGOs about various initiatives happening across Pune
World Environment Day (WED) is marked every year on June 5 to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action. The WED celebration began in 1972 and has become a significant tool for the United Nations to create awareness and encourage political attention and action.

In Pune, a Biodiversity Park is being planned. We asked city environmentalists on what they expect from it. Environmentalist Anupam Saraph feels that the government should explain to people the implications of the biodiversity plan and then implement it properly. “Rivers should be depicted in the development plan in a proper way so that there is no confusion later. This can be done if there is good governance in place and people are informed about the rules,” he said.u00a0
Environmentalist Sarang Yadwadkar observes that merely celebrating the event will not help. “People should be aware of what they are doing to save the environment. Even small acts in daily life such as avoiding the use of plastic will help preserve the environment,” he states.
Bapurao Pawar, project consultant at Janwani, an NGO that works for environmental and heritage preservation, explained that they will be conducing rallies, poster exhibitions and film screenings around the city to create environmental awareness among people.
Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Tata Power adds that various initiatives have been undertaken by the company to promote greenery. “Tata Power aims at striking a balance between the needs of its customers and creation of a clean environment. The company’s gross generation capacity has touched 8521 MW, making it the largest power producer in India. Generation through clean sources such as hydro, wind, waste gases and solar today stands at 1106 MW.”

>> Make best use of waste: At this event, artists such as Sukant Panigrahy and Nivedita Chopra will create innovative artefacts and installations from waste and will also conduct recycling and art workshops. There will also be a plastic and glass waste collection drive at the mall. The collected items will be converted into interesting installations and artefacts that will be put on display for visitors.

Biodiversity park in the offing
A 200 hectare land owned by the state government is now in the first phase of development as a Biodiversity Park. This land is located near Baner, Pashan and Sutarwadi and runs along a range of hills. On the other side of proposed Biodiversity Park lies the Pashan lake and a view of hill ranges that lie beyond the Pune-Banglore bypass. The crest line has variable flat or dome shaped topography much of which is formed by rocky strata with a small layer of soil.
