A Couple of weeks ago, while walking down the lane that houses Eddie's in Bandra, we spotted an addition to the host of eateries that have cropped up in the neighbourhood.
Called Snow House, this little ice cream parlour is dressed in whites and blues, and looks no different from others of its ilk, aside from its starkly different menu, filled with a novelty called snowflake ice cream.

Snowflake ice cream is commonly found in Southeast Asia, particularly in South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Malaysia. What we are served here is the Korean version called patbingsu. The dessert features frozen sweetened milk, shaved so fine in a machine that it resembles snow. Flavoured syrups and other toppings are added to this ice before being served.
Red Bean Snowflake with powder and paste.
Currently, Snow House offers a limited selection, including a plain variant, and unusual ones like moringa. The Red Bean Snowflake (Rs 200) comes topped with bits of mochi (sweet rice cake). It is accompanied by red bean powder and red bean paste. It's authentic as far as the Korean dessert goes, but we wonder how well the Indian palate would adapt to the unusual topping.
Strawberry Snowflake.
We ask for the Moringa and Acai Berry flavours, but are told that they're not available. Instead, we try Oreo Snowflake (Rs 200), which is underwhelming. Although the bowl of shaved ice is topped with an Oreo cookie and a drizzle of chocolate syrup, the side of cookie crumb isn't the best accompaniment.
Our favourite is the Strawberry Snowflake (Rs 250), which is served with a generous topping of stewed strawberries, with a little more of it served on the side. The tart strawberries are a wake-up call to our palates, numbed by the shaved ice.
